Ran by the evil Ernst Stravo Blofeld, SPECTRE wreaked havoc in the modern world by hijacking nuclear weapons and holding countries to ransom to avert world wide catastrophes. But that isn't all. They also hijack space programs to create hostility between major powers, steal diamonds to power lasers, plan chemical warfare and set up Russian and British secret agents to steal valuable spying tools for them to sell.

The Changing Face of Ernst Stavro Blofeld :

Blofeld didn't actually show his face until You Only Live Twice. Before then, we could only see shots of his cat, and shots from behind, and at waist height. When he was finally revealed, he had a terrible scar on the right of his face, and looked like a weak, but menacing man. However, after You Only Live Twice, he returned in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and actually posed a physical threat to 007. How the transformation to weak and feeble, to strong and powerful came about, we don't know. On his final appearance, in Diamonds Are Forever, he was actually cloned, and at one point in the film, there were two Blofelds which was confusing to say the least for 007 !

Is Blofeld dead ? - In a word - maybe. At the end of Diamonds Are Forever, Blofeld got into his escape boat, but was then lifted into the water by a crane, rather vigorously by 007. However, it wasn't made clear whether he was actually killed. 10 years on, in For Your Eyes Only, the pre titles sequence saw Bond in a helicopter, that had been taken over by a man in a wheelchair who has a cat, and was bald, and although his face was unseen, resembled Blofeld in many ways. When Bond gained control of the helicopter, he aimed it at the man in the wheelchair, and lifted him up, and then promptly dropped him in a large smokestack. However, to this day, Bond fans are unsure whether that was Blofeld or not. Maybe SPECTRE's number 1 is still on the run ?
